Captain John W. MacDonald

Captain John W. MacDonald is a seasoned lobsterman with over 40 years of experience, having started his career in 1962. Lobstering runs deep in Captain John’s family: his father and grandfather were also lobstermen, and his family has worked the waters since the 1800s. His boat, the Hazel W., is named after the wife of the boat’s previous owner, from whom he purchased the boat in 1993.

Captain John is passionate about his work and relishes a great day of catching lobster. His daily routine begins every morning at 4:30am and involves dropping over 300 lobster traps with the help of his two-man crew. Despite the frigid cold early in the season, Captain John remains dedicated to his craft.

Captain John’s wife handles all the computer work and licensing, as Captain John says he is too stubborn to do it himself.

Phillips Seafood has launched a new Recipe Challenge asking entrants to show how Phillips inspires them to create new dishes! Running from August 1 through August 31, 2024, the Phillips $1000 Recipe Contest asks home chefs to submit their original seafood recipe featuring any Phillips product as the main ingredient for their chance to win $1000.

Phillips’ signature products began as treasured family recipes, written by hand and passed down through the generations. Now Phillips is inviting others to share their favorite recipes. Entrants can submit as many recipes as they’d like for contest consideration – recipes will be judged on taste, ease of preparation, creativity of flavor combinations and clarity of cooking instructions.

Baltimore, MD – Phillips Seafood honored the Maryland Watermen’s Association (MWA) with an $18,624 donation on April 15th, 2024 to celebrate the efforts of the MWA and their work for watermen throughout the state of Maryland. The donation is a continuation of the Phillips family’s annual financial support of the Association, raised by donating annual proceeds from the sale of Phillips’s Blue Crab Margarita and 100^th Anniversary Cookbook.

Phillips Seafood Restaurants has pledged to donate $1 from every Blue Crab Margarita sold at their Baltimore Phillips Seafood and Phillips Crab Deck locations and $5 from every 100th Anniversary Cookbook sold to support the MWA’s work.

“I come from a family of Maryland watermen and have worked closely with local watermen all my life to supply seafood for our family’s Hoopers Island processing plant and restaurants,” said Steve Phillips. “Without them, our family business would not have grown to where it is today. We’re proud to stand behind the Maryland Watermen’s Association in their efforts to protect the heritage and future of our commercial watermen.”

Since 1973, the Maryland Watermen’s Association has tirelessly served the interests of watermen and the seafood industry throughout the state of Maryland. They have continuously worked to ensure the future of independent watermen and seafood businesses throughout the state. That hard work has given the MWA, its staff and leadership a strong position and high visibility with State and Federal regulators, as well as environmental and business associations and organizations.

Baltimore, MD – March 7, 2024 Phillips Foods is gearing up for expansion into north Atlantic seafood with two recent projects in Canada. In addition to the purchase of the Pêcheries Bas-Caraquet Fisheries facility in Bas-Caraquet, New Brunswick, Phillips has also been approved to acquire the assets of South Shore Seafoods Ltd. in a restructuring deal which encompasses multiple plants in the province of Prince Edward Island as well as holding tanks in Nova Scotia.

The addition of these two entities in Canada will enable a significant expansion of the Phillips product portfolio, not only with frozen, fresh and pasteurized seafood proteins, but also with a future range of newly developed value-added seafood appetizers, soups, cakes and entrées featuring lobster, snow crab, Jonah crab, scallops and more.

“As the market leader in crab, Phillips is perfectly positioned for this expansion of our product line into north Atlantic seafood,” says Steve Phillips, Founder and CEO of Phillips Foods. “Our customer base is always on the lookout for new seafood products, and they count on us to deliver the best. These acquisitions will allow us to bring our same dedication to quality and product safety into a new area of the seafood market.”
